Studio updates and new work from artists in Aotearoa and beyond.
It’s been a busy day mapping out the base of our miniture Hedland topography for next Sunday’s scribblers children’s arts festival here in Hedland. Will be delivering a 8m x 8m installation with 2 main components the centre display which you can see me preparing here which will act as an interactive art piece and the house and fence sculptures that will surround our activity area. Would have had more time for this but return post surgery wasn’t as quick as planned, but we are here and we are creating! Will post updates this week as progress is made
This thread is a documentation of my work at Hedland Arts: From practice in HARTZ Studio, arts practice in community and governance/coordination of the committee & studio.
Getting back into fine line drawings, had a play around during open studio today. Had 2 people join for the first hour of OS and had the studio to myself. Also carved a cool linocut print I’ll put in next update. Prepping to return to Hamilton, NZ in November through to January - keen to meet some local artists, curators & galleries and grow my network back home. I also have a Hamilton specific project I'm looking forward to getting started on.

Working on some Port Hedland Linocut designs to get some limited edition prints in the gallery ahead of Christmas time. Have found the Essdee ink at home isn’t as good as the Matisse block ink we have at the Hedland Arts studio but will give another crack - good draft though!
The lighting is terrible in my house but I've made some good progress on commission for client Lane W. There's still a but to be done but for my first chicken / rooster I'm enjoying the process of finding light and building structure through the feathers.

Artist Feature 009: Isabella Rose Young. Tāmaki Makaurau / Te Tai Tokerau analogue photographer and moving-image artist @isabellaroseyoung works intentionally slowly across 35mm, Super 8, darkroom printing, painting and writing. Her daughter appears throughout the work, but we never see her face. We discussed privacy, disappearing materials, and what the arts lose when visibility matters more than making.
